By james_fudgeModders have turned a 3DS into a PC remote desktop using some homebrew software on the device (and Windows 95, apparently). A post on gbatemp (a forum about modding and homebrew) describes how it all works, though the poster admits the mod is "rudimentary" at this point in time. A video (which you can watch below) shows the hand-held being used to remotely control a character in World of Warcraft. The game's performance isn't very good on the 3DS. Notes on the video note that the software needs "packet compression and various optimizations." There's no doubt that Nintendo probably isn't too keen on this or any other homebrew software running on its hand-held. Still it is interesting to see the 3DS being used in new and interesting ways.
